Learning Goal: We will deepen our understanding of the purposes and parts of school visions.
Learning How to Classify
In order to learn how to classify, we will have a few competitions. First we will classify Legos. Keep in mind that another word for classify is categorize. In this task, I want you to try to come up with as many different ways to classify the Legos as you possibly can.
Once we have classified the Legos, we will attempted the same activity but with our shoes! Next, we will take a break from all of this categorizing and discover what the purpose of visions are. We will go back to our classification later.
The Purpose of Visions
What do you think the purpose of a vision is? What do they provide for a company?
Try to answer these questions in your group:
What characteristics does a vision have?
In what ways are they helpful?
In what ways do you think they could be challenging?
Who do you think should be a part of the creation process?
Please turn to the person next to you and have a conversation to answer that question.
Creating Visions
Now that we have had a conversation about the purpose of visions, lets discuss how they are created. We will watch these videos and try to figure out what the vision for their school would be.
As you watch, keep these questions in mind:
What do you think this school's goal was?
What are the components/steps they probably took to reach their goal?
Next, we will watch a video about another alternative school. After you will get back together with your partner and create this school's vision on your own. If you would like to share with the whole class you may when we come back together.
Homework
We have discussed a lot about visions and how they drive schools or organizations. For homework I would like you to write a vision for our school. You can write one that you think explains how our school is now or you can write it with an idea of how to improve our school in mind. Keep in mind our classifying that we did in the beginning of class. You should think of with the different categories for the qualities you vision should expect from the school community as well as what those individual expectations are. (Hint: You can think of the expectations you created last time and categorize them to create your vision.)
