Learning Goal: Students will practice analyzing in order to use this skill as we look at past reforms to Native American societies as well as current disputes.
What does it mean to Analyze?
Before we can learn how to be better analyzers, we need to first understand what it means to analyze something. Below is the definition from Dictionary.com
Analyze - to examine critically, so as to bring out the essential elements or give the essence of.
In order to better understand what Analytical means and how to get better at analyzing, we will read the article below.
For the remainder of class, we will practice some of our analysis skills. Remember that the goal of analyzing something is to be observant of all of the different parts so we have a better understanding of the whole.
Practice #1 - Follow the steps to learn how to analyze
Step 1: Determine what you want to learn from Analyzing a certain object/event.
Step 2: Identify the Parts
After watching this video, lets determine what the key parts of the story are. Essentially we are breaking down the story into parts.
Step 3: Ask Questions
Next, I would like you to ask as many questions as you possibly can. Think about the characters, the setting, the story, etc.
Step 4: Understand how the parts fit together to help you determine the answer to what you are analyzing.

As you watch this video, please analyze the parts, ask questions, and then (probably after) please tell me whether the parts of this story fit together or if they do not.
Analyzing How Past Events in Native American History Impact Issues Today
There are many issues still facing Native American communities today. In the time remaining, lets look at some of those issues and you may do some additional research on an issue that interests you to dig deeper into what that issue is.
After we have done some research, lets determine what we would like to analyze in the next few days with the issues we will be looking at. Keep in mind that our learning target is: Understands how social, political, and economic reforms of the past impact current events in the U.S.
When we have our question/theme we will be analyzing to try to determine, we will use this in the coming days as we look at some major current issues facing Native American communities and trace them back to similar issues in the past.
