Learning Goal: Students will understand the difference between the freedoms that the Patriots promised would be offered in the new country and the realities of the actual government that was created after the war.
Hook: Create your own Government
In 30 seconds please list as many freedoms as you can think of that you would want your country to have.
After you have done this, please work together to create a government that would uphold all of these freedoms.
Ideals of an Independent Country
Together we will read from "Part III: The War of Independence". We will start with the sub header "Ideas of Independence" and read to where we began last time "On the Battlefield".
After we are done reading, together we will create a mind map labeled "Freedoms Promised by the Patriots". In this I would like you to brainstorm all of the freedoms that the Patriots had promised to give to the citizens of their new independent country.
Realities of a Post War Developing Nation
Next, we will read the end of this packet, starting with the subsection "The Final Peace Treaty". This should explain to us what actually happened after the war as well as the hardships that the new leaders of the country faced.
After we are done reading, we are going to create another mind-map that is called "Realities of the New Country". This will help us map out exactly how the new country turned out and what freedoms were left out.
Homework: Explaining What Happened
For homework, I would like you to compare both of the maps that we created in class and explain what each one represents in your own words. I would also like you to explain what potential problems could arise because of the difference between the maps. What problems could occur because certain freedoms were left out of the new country?
To turn this in you can post it on the google classroom or you can hand in a hard copy.
