Learning Goal: Students will be able to use google maps for the unit as well as state what they would like to learn about Native American history.
Pre-Assessment
First Learning Goal
Our first learning goal is:
"Students will be able to form conclusions on how the establishment of social, political, and economic institutions by the Europeans reformed Native American societies."
What do you think we will need to know in order to meet this learning goal?
The essential question we are trying to answer with this learning goal is:
"Why did the establishment of European social, political, and economic institutions reform Native American societies?"
What questions do you think we will need to ask in order to answer our essential question?
Getting Used to Google Maps
In order to have a good visual understanding of Native American societies during this unit, we will be using Google Maps. Ultimately, we will have a map for our class that everyone will have access to and be able to edit but for right now lets just get used to how Google Maps works. Follow the directions below to learn how to create your own Google Map.
Creating Your Own Google Map: 1. Go to your "Google Drive". 2. Press "New". 3. Scroll down to where it says "More". 4. On the side bar that will emerge click "Google My Maps".
Learning How to Use Google Maps: (We can either learn how to use the map together or you follow the steps below and work at your own pace.)
Try adding a place to the map.
Try changing the color of the point on the map.
Add a description to this point.
Add a picture to this point.
Zoom out so you can see more of the map.
Zoom in.
Add a layer to this map.
Add another point to the map and then draw a line between this point and your first point.
Add a third point to the map and draw a circle between the three points you have.
Shade in the area you have created.
Figure out how to change the color of this area.
Find where it shows the area and perimeter of the shape you just made.
Change the base map.
Figure out how to measure the distance and area. (If you are working on your own and you need help please call me over. I can't type and explain this c: )
Accessing Our Map
Throughout the rest of the semester we will be putting our information about Native American societies onto this map. Please use this map appropriately and follow the ground rules we will create together. (**Hint** It may be a good idea to bookmark this map.)
Homework: Add Some Native American Societies to Our Map
Your homework for tonight is to research the question "What are some Native American tribes?" I want you to find a list of these tribes and add them to our map. In order to do this you may need to look up where this tribe would have been roughly located. Each person should try to find at least 3 tribes.
